Myth

Sitting up straight is overrated

The best posture is the next one. Stillness is the real problem.

Why people believe it

We were told a straight back is a healthy back, so people hold themselves rigid all day and blame their slouch when it hurts. Willpower posture feels virtuous.

What is actually true

There is no single perfect posture, and holding any one position for hours is what loads the spine, straight or slouched. The body is built to move. A rigidly upright office worker and a slumped one both ache for the same reason: they stopped changing shape.

What to do instead

Stop policing the perfect angle and start moving more often. Change position, stand, walk, and give the spine real space a few times a day. A short hang and gentle decompression undo the hours of holding still far better than white-knuckling a straight back.
