Myth
Stretching through pain makes you stiffer
No pain, no gain is exactly wrong for an irritated spine.
Why people believe it
We were taught that progress hurts, so people force deeper into a stretch believing the burn is the fix. Pushing feels like trying harder.
What is actually true
Pain is a protection signal. Stretch into it and the muscle guards harder, so you leave tighter than you came. Real change happens just below the pain line, where the body feels safe enough to let go.
What to do instead
Work at ease, not at effort. In a supported hang your own weight opens the spine gently, with no forcing, and the nervous system stops guarding. If a movement is sharp or shooting, we back off and go softer, a few seconds at a time.
