Can dehydration cause back stiffness? Yes - it is one of the most overlooked reasons a back feels tight, and also one of the easiest to ease. When you are short on water, the very cushions that keep your spine supple are the first thing to dry out, and a dry spine moves like a stiff one.

Most of the time this stiffness is not a warning that something is torn or broken. It is your body flagging a simple shortage, and it usually softens within a day or two once the water comes back and you move a little. Here is what is actually happening in there, and the gentlest way to help it let go.

How a dry body stiffens your back

Between every two vertebrae sits a soft disc, and that disc is mostly water - close to eighty percent of it. Think of it like a sponge for washing dishes: full and springy when it is soaked, flat and stiff when it dries out. When your whole body runs low on fluid, the discs give up some of their water too.
