Gravity Stretching vs pilates: control and strength, or weight off and letting go
Түсіндіруші: әдіс негізін қалаушы
Pilates and Gravity Stretching get put on the same shelf, because both are gentle, both are about the spine, and both draw people who are tired of being told to push harder. But they pull in opposite directions. Pilates teaches the body to hold: a strong centre, precise movement, every muscle in its place. Gravity Stretching teaches the body to let go: you hang on the lianas, the weight comes off the spine, and the muscles that have been guarding for years finally stop. One builds control. The other takes the load away. A lot of people need both, and it helps to know which one you are walking into.
Both in one sentence
Gravity Stretching
Gravity Stretching is a stretching method in which you hang on soft lianas with handles for the hands and straps for the feet, the lianas carry your weight, and gravity gently lengthens the spine and opens the joints while you relax and breathe, with no muscular control required.
Pilates
Pilates is a system of controlled exercises, on a mat or on spring-loaded equipment such as the reformer, that builds core strength, alignment and precise movement through deliberate, repeated, breath-timed work.
The differences, side by side
| Айырмашылығы неде | Gravity Stretching | Pilates |
|---|---|---|
| The core idea | Let go. The weight comes off and the body lengthens by itself | Control. Every movement is precise and driven from the centre |
| Muscles | Asked to stop working. Release, not strain | Asked to work, especially the deep core, with precision |
| Weight on the spine | Taken off. The spine hangs free, space comes back, pressure eases | Stays on, and is managed through alignment and core support |
| Equipment | Individual lianas from the ceiling, handles for the hands, straps for the feet | A mat, or a reformer, cadillac, chair with springs |
| What you learn | To relax into a hang and breathe. Seven levels, five open to anyone | Technique: form, breath timing, sequences, repertoire |
| Effort in the session | As little as possible. The first lesson is to do nothing | Focused and demanding, even when it looks small |
| Feeling after | Lighter and taller, usually from the first session | Worked, held together, sometimes shaky in the good way |
Who each one suits
Gravity Stretching is for you if
- your back feels compressed and heavy, and what it wants is the weight off, not more holding
- you have been strengthening for years and still feel tight, and something in you is asking to let go
- you want to feel lighter today, not after a course of technique
- you are not looking to learn a repertoire, you want to hang, breathe and go home taller
Pilates is for you if
- you want a stronger centre and better control of how you move
- you enjoy precision, technique and getting a movement exactly right
- you are rebuilding strength around a joint and want structured, progressive work
- you like the feeling of having worked, in a quiet and careful way
When it is better not to come to us
If what you need is strength, a stronger core, better control of the body in movement, pilates is built for exactly that and we are not. We do not strengthen you. We take the load off and let the body open. If you leave us wanting to have worked, you came to the wrong door.
If you are rebuilding after an injury with a structured, progressive plan, keep that plan. Ask the person who runs it whether hanging fits alongside it right now, and if it does, we start at the gentlest level.
If the pain is sudden, sharp, or comes with numbness or weakness, see a qualified professional before any class, ours or a pilates studio's. Both of us are for a body that is well enough to move.
Жиі қойылатын сұрақтар
Is Gravity Stretching a kind of pilates?
No. Pilates is built on control: precise movement, a strong centre, muscles doing exactly their job. Gravity Stretching is built on release: you hang on the lianas, the weight comes off the spine, and the muscles are asked to stop working. Same care for the spine, opposite direction.
Which is better for lower back pain from sitting?
For a back that feels squeezed and heavy after the desk, the hang works faster, because it takes the weight off instead of asking the core to manage it. Most people feel lighter after the first session. Pilates helps that same back over time by building support around it. Many people do both: the lianas to unload, pilates to hold it better between hangs.
Can I combine pilates and Gravity Stretching?
Yes, and they suit each other well. Pilates strengthens what holds the spine; the lianas give the spine its space back. Some of our people come to hang the day after a strong pilates session, because letting go after holding feels like the missing half.
I am not strong at all. Is that a problem?
Not here. There is nothing to hold and nothing to control. Five of the seven levels are open to anyone, at any age and any strength. The lianas carry you, and your only job is to breathe and let the body go a millimetre further each time.
